May Long Weekend Is Here — Boating Season Starts Now on Lake Cowichan BC!
It finally arrived. May Long Weekend is here and boating season on Lake Cowichan BC is officially underway. This past winter was one of the longest and wettest in recent memory. Many boaters pushed their plans back further than usual. In addition, lower than normal temperatures kept boats on the trailer longer than anyone wanted. With a great forecast ahead, we expect to see plenty of boat traffic on the lake this weekend!
Before you head out, here are a few important things to consider.
Check Your Safety Gear
Do you have all required safety equipment onboard? Is everything in good condition and up to date? Check that your waterproof flashlight batteries are charged or replaced. Furthermore, make sure you are fully compliant with current Transport Canada Safety Regulations before launching.
Summerize Your Engine First
It’s good practice to check your fluids and inspect your battery before starting up for the season. Run your engine on land using the garden hose and muffs before heading to the launch. As a result, you’ll confirm everything is working properly and avoid surprises at the ramp.
While the engine runs, check your horn, blower, nav lights, anchor light, and bilge pump. Most importantly — don’t forget the drain plug!
If you’re unsure how to properly summerize your boat, Dry Dock Marine in Lake Cowichan BC is here to help get your vessel water-ready.
Watch for Floating Debris
With heavy rainfall and snowmelt this season, creeks and rivers are running high. Wood debris is making its way into the lake. Keep your first mate on lookout for floating logs at all times. Early season impacts can happen in the blink of an eye.
Stay safe out there — and from all of us at DDM, have an amazing long weekend!
