Boat Trailer Maintenance Tips for BC Boaters — Dry Dock Marine Lake Cowichan

Many boat owners focus all their attention on the boat and forget about the trailer. Your boat trailer is a critical piece of equipment. Proper boat trailer maintenance in BC keeps you safe on the road and prevents costly breakdowns. Here are the key areas to inspect and maintain every season.

Grease Your Wheel Bearings

Packed wheel bearings are essential in harsh marine environments. Pump grease into each wheel hub assembly at least twice a year. As a result, you protect the metal-on-metal components from seizing or overheating.

To check bearing wear, jack up one side of the trailer and grip the tire with both hands. Rock it in and out. If there is no play — only spinning — your bearings are fine. If there is movement or wobble, it’s time to replace them. While the grease gun is out, grease your tongue jack and winch too.

Check Your Trailer Lights

Trailer lights are often the most neglected item on the trailer. In addition, a loose connection or corroded ground wire is the most common cause of failure. Here’s how to fix it:

  • Apply dielectric grease (or vaseline) to all plug terminals

  • Clean the male plug with a wire brush or emery paper

  • Locate the ground wire bolt on the trailer tongue — sand off any rust and apply dielectric grease before reinserting

  • If lights still fail after cleaning, use a multi-tester to check all connections

Inspect Your Trailer Brakes

Seized brake calipers and shoes are the most common brake issue we see — almost always caused by saltwater corrosion. Furthermore, prevention is simple. After every saltwater launch, spray fresh water on the back of each wheel and flush the brake components thoroughly. If you launch in saltwater frequently, consider investing in a trailer brake flush kit.

Safety Chain

BC law requires a safety chain connected from your trailer winch post to the bow D-ring of your boat. Many boats imported from US states like Tennessee don’t come with one installed — it’s your responsibility to add it.
